What is the IELTS Test?

The IELTS exam is the International English Language Testing System.

There are two formats for the IELTS: academic and general training

The British Council administers the IELTS.

What is the IELTS Exam Format?

The IELTS academic test consists of four tasks:

  • reading
  • writing
  • listening
  • speaking

These four parts are also on the IELTS general training exam.

The listening and speaking sections of the IELTS general and academic test are nearly identical.

Reading passages on the academic module will include academic texts.

However, reading passages on the IELTS general training exam will include non-academic texts such as letters or advertisements.

For a comparison of the IELTS test format for the general and academic modules, please visit our writing page.
